Putting together cloud-based big data and streaming technologies like AWS DynamoDB and Kinesis, Spark, Hadoop, and Drools can accelerate the healthcare industry’s move from reactive disease treatment and fee for service to preventative wellness support and value based reimbursement.

You may have heard the old stories of Chinese medicine doctors who would be paid a retainer to keep their patients healthy. If a patient became sick, then the doctor would not be paid until the patient became healthy again. Contrarily, in our current system, doctors only see patients when something is wrong and only receive compensation when they provide a treatment for that ailment.

As the healthcare industry shifts away from this system toward one that is largely value-based, the timely collection and interpretation of data will continue to grow in importance. The more we learn about the population, the better we can improve the health of the population.

Our solution comes in the form of a partnership with Big Cloud Analytics (BCA) whereby we are launching the EVŌ smartphone app which allows for a standalone deep wellness experience for the user. This is done by providing real-time, predictive suggestions using the data collected from the population.

Population Health programs will be able to use this kind of data to maintain the health of its communities—stress, sleep, exercise, and overall wellness—while also providing proactive intervention before something more severe happens. For example, in one pilot, EVŌ accurately predicted several individuals who were about to require a hospitalization — 4 to 10 DAYS before the events happened.

We have seen IoT move from the clinical setting to wearables and we will see IoT incorporated into virtually all aspects of our daily lives. This will allow healthcare providers access to reliable and timely information about patient behavior while the patient is carrying out their personal day-to-day activities without a doctor visit.

There are also opportunities for at-home monitoring for recovering patients, closer monitoring of chronic conditions and, maybe not too far in the future, ingestible nanotechnology which would allow for such benefits as an attacking of cancer cells by a swarm of artificial immune cells.

To add real value-based healthcare, we must harness the two key advantages that provide a new level of precision capabilities: cloud-based data management platforms and streaming data processing and analytics. The EVŌ project operates on a cloud-based architecture that can receive data, apply multiple layers of dynamic business rules, and drive alerts and decisions through real-time stream processing using technologies including web services, Amazon DynamoDB and Kinesis, Drools, and Apache Spark. We are excited to see how the technological advances of the next few years and beyond will transform the healthcare system, leveraging the power of data to cultivate a much healthier population.
